We are embarking on an exciting new phase driven by the Fuqua Land Project, centered on the former MADCO gas station site at 4802 W. Fuqua Street. This phase includes a robust community engagement plan. We are focused on transforming this once-blighted area into a vibrant community space that uses community participation as a primary driver in shaping developments to genuinely serve our community’s interests.
The Vision for Fuqua Street
The former MADCO gas station, a 1.5-acre site in Southwest Houston, had long been a concern to our community, garnering the reputation of being a nuisance and safety hazard. Following our acquisition of the site in August 2023, it underwent extensive environmental assessments to ensure its safety for redevelopment. With the gas station infrastructure now removed, the stage is set for a transformative project to revitalize our area.
The planned redevelopment envisions a community green space that seamlessly integrates with the adjacent Simon Michen Park and the nearby Sims Bayou Trail. This vision is not just about creating a park; it’s about fostering a space that enhances the quality of life for our residents by providing a safe, accessible, and enjoyable environment.
Importance of Community Participation
The success of the Fuqua Land Project hinges on active engagement from our residents, ensuring the results reflect all of our needs and aspirations. Partnering with the Environmental Protection Agency, we will gather community feedback through scoping meetings, site visits, and visioning sessions.
Multiple site reuse concepts will be developed, each reflecting community priorities for park space, transportation options, and connectivity to nearby parks and trails. During a future site visit, we’ll ask our community to review the site and provide input on the draft concepts, ensuring the final plan aligns with their vision.
Building for the Future
The Fuqua Land Project focuses on sustainable, equitable, and resilient development. By incorporating strategies for sustainability and climate resilience, we aim to create a lasting positive impact. The final reuse plan, to be completed by Fall 2024, will include community feedback, a cost estimate, and a summary booklet highlighting the project’s process and recommendations.
The Fuqua Land Project is a testament to the power of community engagement in redevelopment. By prioritizing community participation, we, along with our partners, can ensure that the new green space will be a true community asset that enhances the quality of life for our residents and sets a precedent for future developments. As the project moves forward, continued community involvement will be crucial. Please sign up for our newsletter and follow us on social media for ongoing updates.
