Big news! The Hiram Clarke and Fort Bend Houston community has been awarded a Community Challenge grant from AARP, and we could not be more excited about what it means for our streets and our neighbors. This grant is part of AARP’s largest-ever investment in the Community Challenge program, a record $8.3 million supporting 750 projects nationwide to help communities of all ages thrive.

So what will this $2,500 grant actually do? It’s putting the AARP Walk Audit Toolkit to work right here at home. A walk audit is a simple, hands-on activity where residents get out and explore their own streets, checking out sidewalks, crosswalks, and intersections to see just how easy (or tricky) it is to get from point A to point B. With this grant, we get to host five walk audits covering three dozen blocks and five busy intersections, with an extra focus on areas where older neighbors may need it most. The best part? Anyone can join in.

Everything we learn from these walk audits will feed straight into multimodal transportation capital projects already in motion. These are projects our community has already championed, and now we get real, resident-powered data to help shape them even further.

We are beyond grateful to AARP for investing in the Hiram Clarke Fort Bend community and for recognizing that safe, walkable streets matter for neighbors of every age. Keep an eye out for details on how you can join a walk audit near you!
