The Hiram Clarke Fort Bend Redevelopment Authority/TIRZ 25 hosted another Developers Networking Reception this September. The event brought together aspiring developers, industry professionals, and community stakeholders who share a focus on the future of the Fort Bend-Houston Community. These networking receptions are designed to demystify the real estate development process and this one offered practical, entry-level guidance for individuals looking to get involved. That guidance came through a panel discussion, networking opportunities, and a keynote address from Dr. Courtney Johnson Rose, CEO of George E. Johnson Development Inc.
Dr. Rose’s keynote, Real Estate Development 101, offered practical tips for anyone interested in the field. She drew from her decades of experience in commercial and community-based development. She walked attendees through the main phases of a project: shaping the vision, securing financing, managing risk, and bringing a development to market. Real estate development, she stressed, isn’t just for large firms or seasoned professionals. It’s open to anyone with vision, resources, and a strong understanding of community needs.
She reminded the audience that developers don’t all follow the same path. Some come from finance, others from architecture, real estate, or community work. What matters is not where you start, but whether you can bring together land, capital, and expertise to move a project forward. Dr. Rose challenged attendees to “find the need and fill it,” urging them to see development as more than profit. “It’s a way to shape communities, close gaps, and create lasting change,” she said
