The Edison Cultural Arts Center Project is continuing to transform a long-blighted site in Fort Bend Houston into a vibrant cultural anchor for the region. Located at 7100 West Fuqua Drive, the 12.5-acre site, once home to the shuttered Kroger/Willowridge Shopping Center, had stood largely unused for over 20 years. Now, through a collaborative vision led by the Edison Arts Foundation and supported by Hiram Clarke/Fort Bend Redevelopment Authority (TIRZ 25), the area is being reborn as a hub for creativity, community services, and economic opportunity.

As part of a multi-phase $56 million redevelopment plan, the Edison Cultural Arts Center is being developed to serve as a vital resource for underserved youth and families. When complete, it will feature the 400-seat Larry V. Green Main Stage Theatre, named in honor of the late Councilmember and community advocate. Other highlights will include a black box theater, dance studios, an event space, and a computer library.

Phase II Nearing Completion

Phase II of the project’s construction is now 80% completed. This phase will include the new Afterschool Youth Center, Festival Park outdoor green space, and exterior renovations for the on-site retail spaces and is scheduled to be completed by late July to early August 2025.

These key components will lay the foundation for future growth, giving youth a space for fine arts and enrichment programs, and offering the wider community access to retail, green space, and public performances. The Festival Park alone is expected to welcome nearly 20,000 annual visitors, providing a unique gathering spot for outdoor concerts, cultural festivals, and wellness activities.

What’s Next: Interior Construction and Cultural Programming

Looking ahead, Phase III will focus on completing the interior of the Edison Cultural Arts Center, including tenant improvements and final buildout of performance and gallery spaces. This final phase is expected to reach completion in the first quarter of 2026.

The entire campus is envisioned as a catalyst for job creation, youth development, and local business growth. The project will create over 200 full- and part-time jobs, bring in 22 minority-owned businesses, and provide space for a community health clinic, restaurants, boutiques, and a co-op kitchen.

Community First, Future Focused

At its core, the Edison Cultural Arts Center is a story of transformation, turning a neglected space into a thriving, inclusive destination that honors Black cultural heritage and uplifts the community through the arts. With the support of TIRZ 25 and many public and private partners, this initiative reflects what’s possible when strategic investment meets grassroots leadership.
